TERESA WANTS SHOW-CAUSE LETTER AGAINST UTUSAN - Malaysiakini

By Shannon Teoh

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 — Teresa Kok has called for the government to issue a show-cause letter in relation to the “YBJ” short story published in Utusan Malaysia on Sunday.

While debating the 2009 Budget in Dewan Rakyat today, the Seputeh MP said that “we know who it is aimed at despite what Kinabatangan said yesterday. The article asked for me to be shot and encourages violence against an MP.”

Yesterday, Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Mokhtar had defended the article by former magazine editor Datuk Chamil Wariya, calling it simply a work of fiction.

The DAP national organising secretary was questioning last month’s Internal Security Act arrests against her, blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin and Sin Chew journalist Tan Hoon Cheng in her speech.

She said that on one hand, Tan was detained under the Act for reporting on the “squatter” statement by former Bukit Bendera Umno chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail whereas no action was taken against Chamil.

“I do not want ISA action to be taken against Chamil but a show-cause letter to be issued,” she answered to her parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang’s interjection.

Lim had stated that Chamil is the CEO of the Malaysian Press Institute, which provides courses for new reporters to encourage “writing that promotes national unity”.

“The mass media’s silence on this is utterly obscene and irresponsible. Do you gree that Datuk Chamil Wariya should apologise to you and the country?” the Ipoh Timur MP asked Kok.
Kok agreed, saying that “a newspaper should not be allowed to stir up and incite racial and religious sentiments.” -- MI

So any other paper coming up with another fiction but this time on a fictitious YB of fictitious ruling party.

Simple work of fiction is not a crime and we can expect our hero from kenabatang to the defence.
