Adakah kita tinggal dalam negara polis yang segala tindakan mereka tidak boleh dipersoal?

By Neville Spykerman

KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 — Lim Kit Siang today said police should explain press reports that teenager Aminulrasyid Hamzah was shot in the back of the head when he tried to reverse his car and ram police.

The Ipoh Timur MP pointed out that the dead schoolboy’s family has denied the police account which has also been challenged by neighbours and an eyewitness.

“As Aminul was shot in the back of his head and killed, he could not have posed any clear or present danger to police personnel.

“Why did they fire — with some neighbours saying they heard not less than five shots?”

He pointed out that there were other discrepancies including reports that there was a parang in the car.

This has also been denied by Aminul’s mother Norsiah Mohamad, who said the car belonged to his sister and contained shoes and not a machete.

“Will the Selangor police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar personally apologise to the aggrieved family if this official police version is proven to be untrue?”

The DAP stalwart also lashed out at Khalid for issuing what he described as a “ham-fisted” and unwarranted “stern warning” to politicians and the public not to make statements or to speculate on the incident as it undermines public confidence in police integrity and professionalism.

“Khalid is clearly behind time as he does not realise that we are in the era of democratic and accountable policing, and not living in a police state where no questions should be asked about the police.”

Lim said an independent committee should not only investigate the fatal shooting but the conflicting police account of what happened.

He said police by now would know if Aminul was a criminal and should immediately and publicly clear his name and that of his family’s.

He added that a royal commission of inquiry should be established to probe all similar cases including that of Norizan Salleh, 29, who survived being shot five times by police after a car chase in Kuala Lumpur last year.

Lim said today’s assurances by the Inspector-General of Police and the home minister that there will be no cover up does not inspire confidence in the victim’s grieving family or the public - TMI
