Gambar Sultan pada banner - Nak provok Melayu : DSAI

PETALING JAYA, Aug 18 — Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim distanced his party today from the banners put up in Johor late last month, claiming that they were meant to turn the Malays against PKR.

The banners which were found in several areas in Batu Pahat endorsed Johor PKR chief Datuk Chua Jui Meng as the mentri besar candidate.

The banner read: “PKR Johor menyokong penuh Datuk Seri Chua Jui Meng sebagai pengerusi PKR Johor dan calon MB Johor (Johor PKR fully supports Datuk Seri Chua Jui Meng as Johor PKR chairman and mentri besar candidate)."

They were put up to coincide with a PKR-organised public rally and a dinner held in Batu Pahat late last month.

The banner also carried pictures of the Sultan of Johor, Chua and Anwar.

“It was not there in the vicinity of the ceramah or the dinner,” Anwar told reporters after giving his statement to the Batu Pahat police at the PKR headquarters here.

“We would like to see the police act swiftly,” he added.

Early this month, the Johor ruler had expressed displeasure over the banners and urged all parties not to drag him into politics.

The police immediately launched an investigation and had so far taken statements from 39 individuals including the banners’ printer.

“Putting up banners in Malay areas, they are provoking the Malays as if we are promoting Datuk Chua as the MB. The matter does not arise,” said Anwar.

“What was decided by the party leadership was that Datuk Chua was given full mandate to lead the Johor PKR and to strengthen the state Pakatan Rakyat,” he said.

When asked if he had named any individual suspected of putting up the banners when questioned by the police, Anwar said he only asked the police to quickly investigate the case.

“I don’t know about that, I only said they have to investigate swiftly because it is hurting PKR,” said Anwar.

Earlier two officers from the Batu Pahat police headquarters, DSP Che Mahazan Che Aik who was accompanied by ASP Aziz Abdullah questioned Anwar for about one hour.

Anwar said he was questioned as a witness in the case. - TMI
