YB ZUL - RIDING MP - Malaysiakini

2nd UPDATE

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 - Despite being highly confident of winning the Kulim election petition, the Barisan Nasional today dropped the case as speculation mounted that Zulkifli Nordin could join Umno.

Zulkifli's likely defection will be a setback for opposition icon Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who has been talking about BN lawmakers joining him in an attempt to unseat the BN federal government.

But Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Datuk Dr Syed Husin Ali laughingly dismissed the speculation as rumours while declining to comment.

The first time Kulim MP was absent from Parliament today where Anwar slammed BN for economic mismanagement in light of the global financial crisis.

The lawyer, who has faced controversy recently for leading a group against a Bar Council interfaith forum, was one of the first to defend Anwar when the latter was sacked a decade ago.

PKR has yet to take action against Zulkifli for leading the protest but the PKR lawmaker defended his action, saying he is a Muslim above anything else. His fellow PKR members, coalition allies and non-Muslims have blasted his action but he has refused to change his stand.

A PKR source told The Malaysian Insider that the party was in the dark as Zulkifli had not informed the leadership if he was leaving the party or if Umno had even been courting him.
"The rumours are rife because BN withdrew the court petition against him and also because the disciplinary committee has yet to conclude its findings into his conduct at the Bar Council forum," she said on condition of anonymity.

"The investigations are only in the preliminary stage. The committee has called him to record his statement but they have not called the other witnesses to give theirs yet," she said, adding the party was concentrating on more important issues than Zulkifli's actions.

She also dismissed the rumours as unlikely, saying the BN could not afford to get involved in another by-election so soon as the tide of the popular vote from the rakyat were currently against them.

The Alor Star High Court today struck out the Kulim-Bandar Baru election petition when BN withdrew it, ensuring Zulkifli remains as MP.

The BN had filed the petition as it claimed Zulkifli had failed to submit his statement of expenditure from his 2004 general election campaign.

Under the Election Act, candidates who do not submit their statement of expenditure to the Election Commission can be disqualified from contesting in future elections.

The petition was filed by Umno's losing candidate Abdul Aziz Sheikh Fadzir against Zulkifli and the Election Commission.

In the March 8 2008 general election, Zulkifli won the seat, which has 51,995 voters, by a margin of 5,583.

In the 2004 polls, Zulkifli contested the Kuala Langat parliamentary seat in Selangor but lost to Umno's Dr Shafie Mohd Salleh.

Meanwhile, the lawmaker's blog that carried a posting about the election court victory was also filled with comments on his likely defection. Most commentators told Zulkifli that his dissatisfaction with PKR should not push him to join Umno. Instead they asked him to consider joining Pas, a PKR ally in the Pakatan Rakyat.

"Daripada join UMNO baik join PAS. kalu bro join UMNO lu hilang respect dari gua," wrote commentator Anglagestifung.

"YB jadi ke nak masuk BN? Kami tertunggu-tunggu ni, sbb dah banyak desas desus YB nak masuk BN sbb berselisih dengan PKR... boleh YB komen...," asked Lochoe.

Zulkifli has yet to reply to any of the comments and was unavailable for comments. The self-styled Riding MP, as he called himself in the blog, had last posted he was in Mecca to celebrate Hari Raya Aidil Fitri with some Uzbek friends. -- TMI

I am not defending YB Zul but I wish to say this to ALL Malaysians of ALL faith. If you were to ask a "practising Muslim" his answer will always be that he is foremost a muslim before anything else. But if you ask a "ritualistic Muslim" (please refer to RPK's article for a definition of this) then the answer could possibly still be the same though it would most likely be that he is a "Melayu" first or a Malaysian first. This is because a truevbelever in Islam and who fervently practices his religion will always be in total submission to Allah and hence the word "Muslim". The fact that he is a malay, an UMNO member, a PKR member, or even a wakil rakyat is secondary to this total submission to Allah's will. The sooner everybody understands this the better it will be for everybody.
