KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 — After the arrest of former Perlis Mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin for conducting a religious class without authorisation, Shah Alam Member of Parliament Khalid Abdul Samad today claimed that he too had been stripped of such certification on grounds that he had a previous criminal record.
Khalid also alleged that the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais), which made the arrest on Mohd Asri in Gombak near here on Sunday, when questioned why his authorisation was revoked, failed to give a proper answer.
“According to them (Jais), my authorisation to preach was revoked because the police say I have a criminal record.
“When I asked them what crime I committed, they said they are not at liberty to tell because it is confidential,” he said when debating the 2010 Budget at the Dewan Rakyat sitting here.
Khalid was detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) between 1987 and 1988.
The parliament sitting continues tomorrow. — Bernama
