KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 — A RM10 million defamation suit filed by a drama producer against Sistem Televisyen Malaysia Berhad (TV3) has been set for case management on June 25.
Kuala Lumpur High Court deputy registrar Anisah Normah Muhammad Nor set the date in chambers here today after meeting counsel Bernard Liew Kin Jong, who is representing Jurey Latiff Mohd Rosli (the plaintiff), and counsel Ricky Wong for TV3.
Liew told reporters later that the court had ordered both sides to submit issues agreed on and the common bundle for the hearing.
Jurey Latiff, who is also the president of the Malaysian Television Producers Association, in his suit filed on Jan 13 2009 had claimed that the “Melodi” programme aired by TV3 at 12.30pm on Sept 21 2008 in which Nas Ahmad was the host had been defamatory of him.
He alleged that words carrying the meaning that he was an immoral person, a dishonest husband and father and was having an illicit affair with a girl as old as his daughter were said on the show.
He further alleged that the words were said maliciously with the intention of smearing his reputation as a drama producer and expose him to contempt and odium.
He is seeking RM10 million in general damages besides aggravated and exemplary damages, cost and other relief deemed fit by the court. TV3, in its statement of defence filed on Feb 10, 2009, had contended that the station had conditional privilege to have the words said.
It said that as a public broadcaster, it had a moral and social responsibility to expose an immoral and dishonest person to the public. — Bernama
