Jalan Barat PJ jadi Jalan Dr V David ... no no no kata Khalid

PETALING JAYA, May 1 — Plans to rename Jalan Barat as Jalan Dr. V David this morning has been put on hold as the Selangor government mulls other options following objections and a revamp of Petaling Jaya’s roads.

The 11th hour decision comes amid rife speculation that influential state figures had objected to the renaming of the road after the veteran unionist and politician.

Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim (pic) said the state government was in the midst of planning a revamp of the city roads, therefore renaming Jalan Barat might not be as “significant”.

“Jalan Barat will be changed, so renaming it will only be temporary. The roads will be realigned, so we are looking at other roads around the area to be renamed,” Khalid said after launching the state Labour Day celebrations at the Petaling Jaya Civic Centre today.

He however declined to reveal details of any realignment plans of the road, stating that “I can’t tell you yet.”

“Jalan Barat, if its renamed now, might not seem significant. Imagine, if there is to be a road on top of Jalan Barat/Jalan Dr V. David, the MTUC (Malaysian Trade Union Congress) would not be happy,” quipped the Selangor MB in jest.

David was secretary-general for both the Malaysian Trades Union Congress and Transport Workers Union for over three decades.

The official ceremony to re-name the road was to be held today in conjunction with Labour Day.

David was Damansara MP in 1978 before becoming Puchong MP for two terms which he won in the 1986 and 1990 general elections.

He died in 2005 due to a stroke
