GUA MUSANG: PAS is threatening to sue Umno's official online portal for carrying a news report on Friday, which allegedly accuses its Galas by-election candidate of committing close proximity (khalwat).
PAS national elections director Datuk Abd Halim Abd Rahman said the report was malicious and a personalised attack on the character of its candidate Dr Zulkefli Mohamed, 44.
He said the party's lawyers would write to the operators of the portal, demanding they remove the article.
The lawyers were also considering filing a defamation suit, naming as respondents, the portal's operator, owner and author of the purported article.
Abd Halim told a press conference here Saturday that PAS would not resort to any personal attack, particularly against Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, who is the Barisan Nasional by-election machinery director.
However, Umno apparently prefers to indulge in open mud- slinging against the PAS candidate, he said.
Dr Zulkefli who was also present, expressed his horror, saying the report's content claimed that he was allegedly caught with a woman named as Ramelah Mat Jusoh.
"Ramelah is my mother's name. This is uncalled for."
He challenged Umno to check with any religious authority if he was ever detained for "khalwat."
For the record, the medical doctor said his wife's name was Zainab Jalar, 30, and that they had one child.
His wife is a PAS activist in Kuala Krai and Gua Musang.
The by-election was called after its PAS incumbent Chek Hashim Sulaima passed away last month due to cancer. Polls will be held on Nov 4 - mStar
