KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 14 — Raja Petra Kamarudin’s UK-based political group will name its second independent candidate for the coming general election next week, after a closed-door briefing with selected non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on Sunday.
The chairman of the two-month-old Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement (MCLM) named prominent lawyer and human rights activist Malik Imtiaz Sarwar as its first choice candidate in a live Internet broadcast from London two nights ago.
The MCLM is selling itself as a “third force” in politics to “repair the broken system” and seeking to set its pick of professionals from civil society as independent candidates in the 13th general election, widely believed will be called in the next three months.
A notice on its website (http://www.mclm.org.uk) posted yesterday said MCLM president, lawyer Haris Ibrahim, and Malik will be speaking about the “Rakyat taking ownership of the 13th general election and the nation” at its first public forum at the KL and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall in the national capital on December 21 at 7.30pm.
The identity of its second candidate will be revealed then.
Former Bar Council president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan is among several personalities speculated to be part of the team.
A vocal lawyer who has been at the forefront of calls for reforms in governance and election practices, she was last year awarded the International Woman of the Year by the US government.
The Bersih chairman nixed the idea when approach for confirmation.
“No, am not! Wrong info,” Ambiga replied to The Malaysian Insider in a text message.
MCLM will be holding a closed-door briefing with other NGOs of its Barisan Rakyat independent candidate initiative at the same venue on Sunday at 2.30pm.
Attendance is by invitation only. - TMI
