KUALA LUMPUR: There is a move within Umno to oust Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak before the next general election, said PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali.
Quoting Umno sources, he said Najib is aware of the mutiny.
“But he refuses to step down,” he added.
Mustafa claimed that some top guns in Umno consider Najib a liability due to various issues such as the Scorpene submarine scandal.
“Wait for another one or two weeks. You”ll see it more clearly,” he said.
Mustafa’s revelation today followed a report by FMT yesterday that an organisation representing former Umno parliamentarians has voiced its lack of confidence in Najib’s leadership and wanted him to step down.
The organisation called Penawar is headed by former Cabinet minister Aziz Shamsuddin, who was Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s political secretary from 1981 to 2002.
A Penawar member told FMT that the organisation decided in a meeting last week that it was time for Najib to relinquish his post
