SHAH ALAM, Oct 22 – Selangor state executive councillor Teresa Kok has issued a letter of demand asking former Selangor menteri besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo to apologise to her and pay RM10 million in damages for ruining her reputation by claiming that she had supported a petition calling for the volume of the Azan (Muslim prayer call) to be lowered.
Kok told reporters on the sidelines of the Selangor State Assembly sitting here today that she had sent the letter prepared by her lawyer dated Tuesday to Dr Khir by facsimile also Tuesday.
The demand letter, copies of which she circulated to pressmen, claimed that Dr Khir had replied to a question posted to his own personal blog that there was a petition from the Chinese community in Kinrara, Puchong calling for the volume of the Azan at the mosque there to be lowered, which he (Dr Khir) claimed had the support of Kok.
The words used by Khir appeared to suggest Kok was anti-Islam, anti-Malay and had committed serious criminal offences under the Penal Code and other laws of Malaysia, the letter said.
Besides demanding that Khir retracts his statement, apologise and pay for damages, Kok wants Dr Khir to bear all the legal costs arising from this matter. – Bernama
