TERESA KOK DEMANDS DAMAGES FROM UTUSAN AND UMNO MAN - malaysiakini

By Debra Chong
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 – Seputeh MP Teresa Kok wants Utusan Malaysia and the chief executive officer of the Malaysian Press Institute Datuk Chamil Wariya to take full responsibility for publishing the short story "Politik Baru YB J" which she claims to have severely damaged her reputation and threatened her life.

She is also demanding RM100 million in damages.
At her instruction, her lawyer Sankara Nair, last Friday sent a letter of demand to the Malay-language daily and to Chamil asking them for an immediate retraction of the article, including from the newspaper's website and an apology as well as a promise not to repeat the allegations.
Utusan and Chamil have been given seven days to reply to Kok's demands. She has warned them that she will take legal action against them if they do not comply.

This is not the first time the Umno-owned newspaper has been taken to task by Kok for publishing allegedly defamatory articles.

On Oct 9, Kok filed a RM30million suit against the newspaper and its columnist Zaini Hassan over another article which claimed that Kok had "forced" a mosque in her state constituency from using louspeakers in making the azan, the compulsory Islamic calls to prayer.

Kok's lawyer has also sent a similar letter of demand to Cheras Umno division chairman Datuk Syed Ali Alhabshee for allegedly saying that her lawsuit against Utusan is like suing the entire Malay community.
"She never wanted to sue Malays, just Utusan," Sankara was reported to have said then.

She is asking him for RM10 million in damages. As with Utusan and Chamil, Syed Ali has seven days to reply. -- MI
