JOHOR BARU, Sept 6 — Dr Gunawan Mahmood, the political secretary to the Johor mentri besar, was found dead in his office in the Dato’ Jaafar Muhammad building, Kota Iskandar here at 3pm today.
Gunawan, 51, a diabetic, had in the morning complained that he was not feeling well and had sought medical treatment at a private clinic before returning to his office, apparently to rest.
However, he was later found motionless and slumped in his seat, with his hands hanging downwards, by staff of the MB’s office.
His nephew, Wahyu Budiman Rendra, said he received a call at 4pm from Gunawan’s wife informing him of his death.
The body was taken to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital for a post-mortem.
According to Wahyu, Gunawan’s body will be taken to Felda Ulu Tebrau for burial at the Felda Ulu Tebrau Muslim cemetery tomorrow.
Gunawan was appointed political secretary to the MB in 2008. He is survived by his wife, Norhayati Maarof, and four children aged between 13 and 21. — Bernama
