KUALA LUMPUR: A man believed to be a member of Kumpulan Mujahiddin Aceh (KMA), an Indonesian militant group fighting for the establishment of an independent Aceh state through force, was arrested on Sept 29.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Hussin Ismail said Taufiq Marzuki @ Sulaiman Tarmizi, 29, was arrested under Section 73(1) of the Internal Security Act 1960 for suspected involvement in militant activities which could threaten national security.
"Taufiq had fled to Malaysia on March 12 when the group's ideological and military training camp in Bireuen, Aceh was raided by Indonesian police," he said in a statement issued, here, today.
He said the arrest was to facilitate a thorough investigation as Taufiq's presence in Malaysia could harm national security.
"The investigation was aimed at uncovering and curbing foreign militant networks from making Malaysia their safe haven," he added.
On another case, Hussin said Indonesian police arrested a man from Tawau at Nusantara Port, Pare-Pare, Celebes on Oct 20 for smuggling 7,000 units of India-made detonators into Indonesia.
He said the 40-year-old man was believed to have smuggled the detonators from southern Philippines to Tawau and then took a passenger ferry to South Celebes via Nunukan.
"The man was arrested under Indonesia's Emergency Law 1957," he said.
Hussin said the two arrests were made possible through the sharing of information between the Royal Malaysian Police and Republic of Indonesia Police, and the cooperation would continue to combat weapons smuggling and terrorism in the region - Malay Mail
