GEORGE TOWN, 11 MAY, 2011: A 20km chase, shots fired. It was high drama in Batu Ferringhi here today.
The drama unfolded at 4pm when when a car driven by a 26-year-old man with four women passengers inside tried to avoid a police roadblock, leading to police mounting a chase.
The car escaped in the direction of Tanjong Tokong where a patrol car tried to intercept it but the driver managed to evade and headed for the Penang bridge where police had to fire up to five shots at the car's tyres to bring it to a stop.
Timur Laut District police chief ACP Gan Kong Meng said all five occupants of the car, who only sustained minor injuries, were apprehended.
"Police found a packet of syabu ((metamphetamine ) in the car and syabu smoking equipment in the car," he told reporters here.
The incident caused a three-hour traffic jam mainland bound on the bridge.
